Job Description

PayPal Seller Risk – Commercial Underwriting Analyst

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

As a Commercial Underwriting Analyst, you will develop holistic risk views of PayPal sellers through robust analysis and assessments, leveraging your strong business and financial acumen, logical reasoning and superior communication skills to make clear, justifiable recommendations for fair, balanced and timely risk mitigation.

What does the role entail?

As a Commercial Underwriting Analyst, you will develop holistic risk views of PayPal sellers through robust analysis and assessments, leveraging your strong business and financial acumen, logical reasoning and superior communication skills to make clear, justifiable recommendations for fair, balanced and timely risk mitigation.

  • Timely assessments of merchant credit and fraud risk over the merchant life cycle.

  • Analyze and interpret financial statements, developing a view of the merchants’ financial health and its implications to PayPal’s risk and seller relationships.

  • Analyze and interpret merchant & industry business models, credit reports, merchant processing history, internal PayPal data, background investigations, bank and trade references, etc. developing a view on their impact to PayPal risk and seller relationships.

  • Conduct merchant assessments in view of PayPal Acceptable Uses, Federal and State Regulatory Compliance, Credit Card Compliance and Legal Considerations.

  • Estimate financial exposures to PayPal from sellers, using reasonable assumptions, and assess the need for and extent of risk mitigation measures.

  • Develop a holistic point of view on assessed merchants, proposing appropriate recommendations for mitigating PayPal’s risk and managing seller experience.

  • Develop insights on merchants, sectors and markets based on assessments, peer analyses, etc.

  • Clearly articulate the recommendations and assessment drivers to stakeholders as needed (ex: risk management teams, business units, PayPal merchants, etc.). Communicate professionally and effectively with cross-functional stakeholders throughout.

  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation and audit trails of underwriting assessments, reports, methodologies, etc. in a timely manner.

  • Monitor seller performance across portfolio segments, as needed

  • Ensure appropriate escalation to, and follow up with, internal departments and management on issues that may arise.

  • Provide feedback on data, tools and assessments for continuous improvement, along with on-going development of policies, products, tools, and procedures for process enhancement.

  • Support the planning, testing & adoption of new policies, processes, data sources, activities, tools, etc., providing timely and constructive feedback, collaborating with the relevant stakeholders.

  • Other opportunities & projects relevant to managing the financial risk of PayPal’s sellers.

Skills: You would -

  • Have a college degree and/or professional qualification in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related fields, or equivalent work experience

  • Have 2-3 years of relevant experience, in underwriting or credit risk assessment

  • Be experienced in financial statement analysis, financial modeling and/or valuation

  • Be comfortable with complex data and analytics to draw meaningful insights

  • Be a team player, with strong interpersonal & communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Be highly curious and thoughtful - a proactive self-starter with a sense of urgency and bias for action, un a fast-paced environment

  • Have familiarity with OFAC, Anti-Money Laundering, and other regulatory compliance requirements for merchants, as a plus

  • Be familiar with MS Office, Salesforce, internet research & database tools. SQL is a plus, but not essential.
